This is the presentation of the Saint of the day for March 25, Saint Lucy Filippini by Catholic Lectionary.
Life of Saint Lucy Filippini
O Christian Soul, after reading the life of St Lucy Filippini, I started thinking that after all, teachers may be the ones who will transform this world.
But it is a pity that most teachers do not even know the great charge which God has given to them, neither do they know the great powers they have to either make a child or mar the child.
Lucy Filippini was a very holy young lady whom Cardinal Marc Anthony Barbarigo entrusted the charge and care of a school he opened in the town of Montefiascone, in Italy, for the training of girls, especially the poor.
Lucy and Blessed Rose Verenini, another pious lady, trained a group of teachers called ‘Pious Teachers’ and together they all dedicated themselves to the work of training young girls for the good of the society, of the Church, and of the whole world.
In this school, the girls were taught domestic arts, weaving, embroidering, reading, home-making and Christian Doctrine.
When the young women from this school got home, they taught their siblings, parents, relations and friends the good works they learnt from school, and their lives also radiated the Christian virtues they learnt too.
Before very long, many families and many youths of Montefiascone became transformed, holy, hardworking and responsible. Hundreds of girls trooped to the school and in order to accommodate them all, more branches of the school were opened.
Lucy became well known and was called the ‘Maestra Santa’ (the Holy School Mistress).
Reflect on your Life
O Christian teacher, is it possible that you can add some prayers to your teaching? Yes! Begin your lectures with prayers and end it with prayers.
Daily, report back to God in prayers on how your students are fairing, and ask His blessings and mercies upon them and upon you. Love your students, don’t scare them away.
They are only little flowers who may shrink away from your touch if your touch is too harsh. Make out time to know them, for St Albert the Great made out time for both the brains and souls of his students, and in this way he produced an academic giant who is a spiritual giant as well – St Thomas Aquinas.
O dear teacher, be holy, be prayerful. O, how unholy teachers will weep on the Last Day, for they have done nothing but produced intellectual devils for the world.
Call for Meditation
‘Catholic education is above all a question of communicating Christ, of helping to form Christ in the lives of others…’ [St John Paul II].
This day Jesus, the Exemplary Teacher, help me to live my life in such a way that when others look at me or interact with me, they will be drawn to You. Amen.
Having gone through this piece about saint of the day for March 25, make effort O Christian soul to amend your life. Peace of Christ be with you.
