Life of Saint Braulio, Bishop of Saragossa
O Christian soul, St Braulio was a holy bishop who lived a poor life. Though he was very intelligent and was an eminent scholar yet he brought himself so low that he wore only garments that were rough and plain.
His food was very simple and he lived an austere life. Bishop Braulio had a lot of duties, but he made sure that they never prevented himself from his constant ministrations in his cathedral church.
He spent many hours of the day and night in prayer. It was said that the end of his life, was saddened by a failing eyesight – a heavy trial to anyone, but especially to a scholar. The last days of his life was spent in the recitation of Psalms.
Reflect on your Life
Do you know that the word of God is consolation and we all need consolation on the day we die? A certain man was losing his faith in God and he was contemplating departing from the Christian Faith.
Suddenly something moved him to pick up his bible and he began to read the book of Psalms, from chapter one. For a long time, he did not stop, he read from chapter to chapter.
At a time, tears started falling from his eyes. He closed the bible and wept. With His word and through those tears, God washed away the man’s fears and doubts, and so wrapped him up with His love, mercy, heavenly consolation and comfort.
O Christian Soul, aren’t you too fast? Slow down, and learn the secret that is hidden in God’s word. Read at least 3 chapters of the Book of Psalms a day.
Learn some Psalms by heart, so that even when you are at your work place or on the road, or driving or eating, you can recite them in your heart so as to be constantly communing with God.
Sin can never dwell in a heart that ponders the word of God day and night, instead God will make your heart His home. You know, when someone is dying, the kingdom of darkness struggle to gain his soul, and the kingdom of light also struggle to gain his soul.
A dying soul that is listening to the word of God while he dies, do you think the devil will have power over him?
But if a soul is dying, with no pious persons around to pray for him, to place holy pictures around him, to read the bible to him,
the devils who are surrounding his death bed could make him visualize unholy and impure pictures in his heart and he will die wallowing in sin.
So you see why St Braulio and other saints died holy deaths. O Christian Soul, read more and more of God’s word, for God loves you. Jesus is yours and mine.
